Our friend China, lead singer for Pink Martini, was on tour in Japan at the exact same time we were there. Happily, we got to hang out with her in Tokyo and Kyoto, and see her perform in Yokosuka. We came to the concert for China’s incredible voice, but we stayed for “The Handshake.” Check out this uniquely Japanese after-show ritual.(P.S. Look for part two “China In France” when our schedule intersects with hers again in Paris next April.)
China seems like such a nice person to visit…no matter what country. I will look forward to her future appearance on these pages: China in France!
And it put a big smile on my face to see Finny washing his hands by association. Is there anything that young fellow does that ISN’T adorable? (a rhetorical question! lol)

Love her. Love Pink Martini. Love the handshake! Get me my purell immediately!
OMG! I saw Pink Martini for the first time 3 days ago in Boston. China was amazing! All of them. Ari Shapiro too! Then I watched “Infinitely Polar Bear(which I wept through) and now I will buy tickets for jennie and Jasper and myself to go to their performance in Brooklyn on June 1. Jennie told me you know Maya and China. What childhoods they had!!!
I love following you guys. You complete me.
I am seeing them at the end of the month! Thrilling!
Another in a series of great posts! I have to ask: who is the (Japanese?) artist on the theme song for that video, and what is the name of the song? I have to add it to my playlist!
We miss you guys!

That is China herself singing with Pink Martini! The song is Taya Tan off their second album “Hey Eugene.” Their title track on that album is one of our favorites as well.
OMG! I LOVE Pink Martini. I used to listen to them endlessly – such a long time ago. I mean endlessly. You’ve rekindled a love affaire with their music for me. Thanks!
I am listening to them endlessly now….for the very first time. Addicted, in fact. Overnight.
