Throughout our travels, we’ve discovered a handful of villages (complete with schools, stores and hospitals) floating in the middle of vast bodies of water throughout Southeast Asia. The first was in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. The second was a fishing village in Thailand. But we didn’t get to know either of these villages as intimately as we got to know the floating village on Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. Join us for this (very) close-up look at how other people live across the world.
Perfect. I love this.
We spent a day there when the lake was low. There is, of course, no sewage system and fresh water is a purchased item. The same water used for bathroom needs was used to wash dishes and people. So few of the children’s families can afford the school fees. Most the flowing homes were even poorer than your home for a night. (How do you avoid tummy problems in these circumstances?)
One night that will never be forgotten.
And with the passing years, the memory will become less mosquito infested, less sweltering, and sweeter than the candy in a Christmas stocking.
How did you manage such an overnight? VRBO?

The home stay is actually facilitated by an NGO called Osmose, an organization dedicated to teaching skills to the locals in the village so that they can expand their economy (they help the villagers sell their weaving back in Siem Reap and they’re helping them to create and sustain an eco-tourism business). Ironically, with this donation, our night sleeping on the floor under mosquito nets was the most expensive night of our trip so far!
Thanks for responding.
If you donation does some good, your night with the bugs will be well worth it—beyond having had a memorable, but awesomely uncomfortable experience.

So beautiful. What is the music?
The song is “Far Away” by Ingrid Michaelson.
Every time I receive something from you guys I am left wanting more. I need you to do a documentary about each place! (I’m greedy…)
again.. you travel videos inspirit me a lot. I like your documentary videos and wanted to have my own travel documentary when i start my journey Apr 13.
Wonderful and fascinating… thank you for sharing that amazing experience. Glad you had the opportunity…love,Wendy
Super music matching
Just saw this…somehow missed it before.
What an adventure! And how ironic that it was your most expensive evening. I hope it helps the people of the village. Can’t wait to hear more about that particular visit to the floating village. I have lots of questions!
